Description

This module is designed to introduce students to the function and construction of the tectonic elements of buildings and their inter-relationship with architectural form, structure and building services. It will also give students an understanding of their effect on the thermal, day-lighting and energy efficiency performance of buildings. Topics will include the anatomy of buildings and the functions of building elements; building materials and their applications; building envelopes as membranes controlling energy flow in/out of a building; functions of a membrane and cladding systems. Lectures supplemented by tutorials and workshops will allow students to develop their skills in integrating tectonic design and development in an holistic manner. The module is only available to students on the MSc in Architectural Engineering Design.
